Frequently Asked Questions
Who can volunteer?
Anyone can volunteer at the Sudbury Hospice providing he or she is at least16 years of age, and passes a reference check. Volunteers who work directly with residents must be at least 21 years of age and must pass a police check.
What skills do I need in order to work with residents?
The most valuable skill a resident support volunteer can have is the ability to listen. The Sudbury Hospice also prizes sensitivity and respect for all, and multilingual volunteers are especially appreciated. But most of all, the best thing a volunteer can do for a resident is just to be there, and listen.
What kind of training do you offer?
TBA
How much of a commitment do I have to make?
Long and short-term commitments are possible. Tell us what kind of commitment you feel comfortable with, and we’ll find the right opportunity for you.
May I take vacations?
Vacations are encouraged. Just give us advance notice so that we may schedule someone in your place.
How many hours am I committed to per week?
Hospice volunteers assigned to a resident will volunteer an average of four hours a week. Reception volunteers are assigned to work once a week from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. or 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Other volunteers work as required to help complete assigned projects.
Is it possible to volunteer for special events or fundraising efforts only?
Of course! We host a series of fundraising and special events throughout the year and volunteers are instrumental in their success.
May I volunteer with the Sudbury Hospice if someone close to me has died?
We ask that you wait a year before volunteering in resident support. However, you may take on a non-resident support volunteer role.
What's the first step in becoming a volunteer?
Simply call us.
Not sure or not ready to become a volunteer?
That's okay. If you want more information before making a decision, or if you are retiring soon and are thinking about how you will spend your time, give us a call anyway. We’ll keep you informed of the Sudbury Hospice opportunities whenever you are ready to participate.
