Maison La Paix (MLP)

Present Mandate

Maison La Paix (MLP) is a bilingual, non-profit charitable organization, committed to improving the quality of life and offering ongoing support, palliative and end-of-life care to individuals in need of self-care and/or semi-autonomous.  In a homelike atmosphere, surrounded by their loved ones, residents find the haven they need to live and die in peace and with dignity.

The goals of Maison La Paix include:

  • Offering a supportive housing program for Persons Living with HIV/AIDS (PHAs);
  • Offering a residential hospice palliative care program for persons in terminal stage;
  • Improving the quality of life of residents by alleviating pain;
  • Offering symptom management through individualized care;
  • Offering comfort and support by attending to the physical, psychological, social, cultural, emotional and spiritual needs of the residents;
  • Offering a support system to help residents and their loved ones deal with sickness and bereavement, with the assistance of a devoted staff and a team of visiting hospice palliative care volunteers; and
  • Collaborating with a interdisciplinary team of caregivers and service providers, in order to better serve the needs of the community.

Maison La Paix is managed by a full-time Executive Director and is staffed by a Resident Care Coordinator (RPN), who is responsible for the overall planning, delivery and ongoing monitoring of resident care, and the supervision of Registered Practical Nurses and Personal Support Workers (full-time and part-time). Their responsibilities include assisting residents with all aspects of their daily life (as required) and helping to ensure residents have a supportive and caring environment. MLP also enjoys the services of volunteers who accompany residents to medical appointments and personal outings, offer support and companionship, palliative care as well as assisting with meal preparation and fundraising.

The government funding that Maison La Paix receives is still not sufficient to cover all the operating costs. The Board, staff and volunteers of MLP must still raise more than $100,000 every year through various fundraising activities, grants and donations from individuals, foundations, religious congregations and community groups. MLP also receives funding from United Way (member agency since 2001), FedNor, the John Carl MacIsaac Foundation, HRDC (Summer Career Placements), the Sudbury Food Bank, the Living Well Fund (Access AIDS Network), as well as fundraising from Valley Bingo and the Student General Association at Laurentian University (Charity Ball).
