Sudbury Hospice Steering Committee (SHSC)

Original Working Groups

The Sudbury Hospice Steering Committee (SHSC) will strike working groups as required. Members-at-large and representatives from community partners will be invited to join these groups. Proposed working groups include:

  • Capital Funding
  • Finances
  • French Language Services
  • Fundraising
  • Land & Building
  • Marketing
  • Mission & Vision
  • Program & Services

Working groups will make recommendations to the Steering Committee and are accountable to this Committee.

Responsibilities of the Working Groups

Capital Funding

  • To undertake a major capital campaign for the Sudbury Hospice (SH);
  • To lobby funding agents and other major donors.

Finance:

  • To oversee the financial management of the Sudbury Hospice;
  • To review budget and operational costs;
  • To review budget and capital costs;
  • To develop the financial policies and recommend modifications, as needed;
  • To develop the internal control procedures and evaluate its effectiveness;
  • To act as an intermediary between the SH and the auditor;
  • To give advice as required.

French Language Services

  • TBA

Fundraising

  • To design and implement a major fundraising campaign for on-going operational costs of the Sudbury Hospice;
  • To direct and execute fundraising activities;
  • To develop a yearly fundraising plan to meet the fundraising objectives of the SH;
  • To provide direction to the SHSC;
  • To recruit and enhance the membership;
  • To evaluate the past year’s activities, on an annual basis.

Land & Building

  • To prepare Requests for Proposals (RFP) for architectural work;
  • To oversee the construction of the Sudbury Hospice;
  • To recruit partners and volunteers with an interest and/or experience in landscaping, gardening, interior and exterior design, project and construction design;
  • To set up a Building Materials Suppliers Program for interior and exterior design.

Marketing

  • To develop a communication and marketing plan for the Sudbury Hospice;
  • To support the activities of the organization by promoting fundraising, educational and public initiatives;
  • To establish and develop media relations;
  • To identify partnerships with key community partners;
  • To increase the overall level of public and provider awareness of hospice palliative care and the SH;
  • To identify training and research opportunities in hospice palliative care;
  • To oversee the development of a WEB page for the SH, develop PowerPoint presentations and promotional materials;
  • To identify the key messages.

Mission & Vision

  • To define the mission, vision and values of the bilingual Sudbury Hospice;
  • To develop the policies and procedures of the SH based on the quality dimensions: accessibility, client perspective, competence, continuity, safety;
  • To develop the standards of the SH based on the CHPCA – “A Model To Guide Hospice Palliative Care” (March 2002) and the “Hospice Association of Ontario – Community Residential Hospice Standards” (March 2005). 

Program & Services

  • To oversee the development of an integrated model of hospice palliative care through a team-based approach to care delivery, in a community residential hospice environment;
  • To develop the programs and services of the Sudbury Hospice, including a day program (massage therapy, art therapy, reflexology, games, etc.), volunteer program, counselling and support services, spiritual care, and bereavement support, etc.;
  • To help develop training opportunities in hospice palliative care.
